Silver Way (I), Southern Way from Huelva, Via Augusta from Cadiz
The Silver Way (I), the Southern Way from Huelva and the Via Augusta from Cadiz make up the set of Ways of Saint James originating in Western Andalusia. These routes form a network traversing the Iberian Peninsula from south to north; the Silver Way serves as the main route, while the other two are variant paths that merge into it. Much of the journey follows the alignment of ancient Roman roads, creating a monumental itinerary steeped in history.
The Silver Way has been one of the Iberian Peninsula's primary transportation arteries since time immemorial. Its main section runs between Seville and Astorga, where it joins the French Way, traversing the provinces of Seville, Badajoz, Caceres, Salamanca, Zamora and Leon, and passing through the cities of Merida, Caceres, Salamanca and Zamora. The Silver Way features a variant starting at Granja de Moreruela that heads directly to Santiago de Compostela, and it also intersects with other Jacobean routes running east to west.
The Southern Way from Huelva is a Jacobean route that begins in Huelva and heads northeast, eventually reaching Zafra, where it connects with the Silver Way. It is an appealing route that crosses various natural landscapes between the provinces of Huelva and Badajoz, such as the Sierra de Aracena & Picos de Aroche Natural Park.
The Via Augusta from Cadiz can be considered a prelude to the Silver Way, linking the city of Cadiz with Seville. Following the path of the ancient Roman road from which it takes its name, it traverses the provinces of Cadiz and Seville. The route is predominantly flat, passing through Jerez de la Frontera and numerous other towns rich in history and charm.
